Novelist Cornelia Funke’s popular children’s story about the love of literature is not well served by this confusing fantasy adventure revolving around people called Silvertongues who, when they read aloud from a book, magically bring its characters to life. Filmmaker Teresa Prata discovered Mia Couto’s “Sleepwalking Land” on a library shelf in Berlin. Prata, just beginning her film studies, was a newcomer to Germany and to cinema.
“You could say I didn’t find the book, the book found me,” says Prata, indicating that Couto’s novel about wartime friendship was an immediate, stay-up-all-night reminder of her own childhood in civil war-torn Mozambique. Read more

In the ‘AWFJ in the News‘ category, add the just-released 100 Best Blogs for Film And Theater Students list, where the Alliance of Women Film Journalists now resides in the good company of Roger Ebert’s Journal, The House Next Door, Steppenwolf, Theater Notes and others in the ‘miscellaneous’ category. Since one of AWFJ’s missions is student outreach, there’s nothing miscellaneous about our delight in being named to this excellent and purposeful list.

Conceived to encourage filmmaking in countries with developing film communities, the annual Global Lens series is a collaboration between MoMA and the Global Film Initiative (GFI), a San-Francisco based nonprofit that provides seed money to selected projects. The annual ten-film series has been screened at MoMA since 2003. The program’s mandate has no specific gender equality clause, but this year half of the films are directed by women.
