Re: Jon Voight as dad: This reminds me of the (satirical) Onion piece about how women have "come a long way" in how they are depicted on screen because they are seen as: "sexy AND strong, sexy AND powerful, sexy AND intelligent". Also a wonderful line about this being a great step forward for women and "the men who write for them". So a woman can do anything she wants - but better look sexy doing it! It does speak to how we have internalized this message when a father praises his daughter in this way. This is the "double bind" of which feminists have spoken since the fifties. We are reinforced for looking a certain way - then our looks in turn are used as a way of reminding us that we are the "other" the one being judged and observed and that men are in the "one up" position in terms of making the judgement. Thanks for allowing me to vent about this and for listening.

re: Jon Voight as dad: Since when did sexy replace the words beautiful, talented, intelligent, etc.? If my dad called me sexy, I'd throw something at him. The word is over used and is on the verge of becoming meaningless. Maybe it's intended as a complement, but from a father about his daughter, it sounds creepy.
Thanks for listening.
