fifth element posterLuc Besson’s classic femme-centric scifi actioner is being re-released in theaters to mark the film’s 20th anniversary. Concurrently, SONY is preparing a special edition Blu-ray/DVD, which will be available in July 2917.

As you may remember, Luc Besson’s supremely engaging super heroine, Leeloo (Milla Jovovich), the titular Fifth Element, arrives on Earth to save our planet from complete annihilation by utter all-consuming evil. She is a genetically perfect being. Super powerful Leeloo quickly absorbs all the knowledge she needs to understand Earthlings and human history, including the horror of war which our species has inflicted upon ourselves. She figures out what she must do to fulfill her mission, but her empathy and compassion for the pain she observes leads her to dispair, and she wonders whether her mission is really worthwhile. Ultimately, what she must experience in order to carry on is love, the supreme human emotion. Nice message there!

The Fifth Element‘s galvanizing plot is filled with challenges to Leeloo’s well-being and success. Action sequences are beautifully balanced with engagingly quirky humor and flamboyant displays of style. The performances are splendid. The film’s cinematography and production design are gorgeous. Special effects are super — even if created 20 years before the most recent technologies.

As the new version of Wonder Woman is about to blockbust her way into into women’s psyches, it’s the perfect time for The Fifth Element to appear again on the big screen and re-establish her place among our galaxy of superstar cinematic female heroines.
