Fantasia logoThis year’s Fantasia International Film Festival’s shorts section BORN OF WOMAN showcased some extraordinary thrills and terror. Of the 9 selections in the program, we have stories that range from sci-fi to horror, to the downright strange and unusual. What makes these shorts unique is that fact that they are all directed by women and are femme-centric in their storytelling. Since its 2016 incarnation, BORN OF WOMAN  has added something that has perhaps been missing in a genre that is predominantly known to have a misogynistic overtone. Here are the 9 films showcased this year.

GAZE

Screen Shot 2018-07-25 at 3.20.59 PM (1)USA, 14 min
Dir. Ida Jogler
A young science grad student is having blackouts again. This film puts a sci-fi twist into a #MeToo backdrop.

PETITE AVARIE

Petite Avarie
France, 20 min
Dir. Manon Allirol & Leo Hardt
A young woman is just diagnosed with cancer and her boyfriend is a selfish bastard. She takes control in her own special way. This film is totally irreverent, a sick sad love story exploding into madness.

LUCY’S TALE

Lucy's Tale 1

USA, 17 min

Dir. Chelsea Lupkin
A coming-of-age horror about teenage awkwardness and  bullying (with little something extra.)

NOSE NOSE NOSE EYES!

Nose Nose Nose EYES! 1
South Korea, 14 min
Dir.  Jiwon Moon
This film needs to be viewed without description. It is a dark powerplay within a family dynamic.

VOYAGER

Voyager
Norway, 8min
Dir. Kjersti Helen Rasmussen
A mysterious stranger appears inside a science base. Who is he and where did he come from? Haunting and stunning sci-fi, Voyager is the shortest film but with a big impact.

CATCALLS

Catcalls3
Ireland, 9min
Dir. Kate Dolan
Two young women are harassed but aren’t prepared to brush it off. This film is about destroying an unhealthy dynamic by gruesome force.

PUPPET MASTER

Puppet Master 2
Finland, 15min
Dir. Hanna Bergholm
A woman yearns for love and allows a mysterious man to transform her into a puppet. Puppet Master is visually and emotionally captivating, a beautiful ballet of power between man and woman.

WHO’S WHO IN MYCOLOGY

Who's Who in Mycology 2
USA/Czech Republic, 16min
Dir. Marie Dvorakova
A magical dream, this film is a stylized visual delight topped off with humor and a soundtrack that will make you smile. It’s so much fun. Interestingly enough, it is the only male-centric film in the sense that a man is thrust into a woman’s private abode. While the woman is present, she is unconscious. It is nothing like it sounds. It is playful and a pure joy to view.

THE WOMAN WHO HID FEAR UNDER THE STAIRS

The Old Woman Who Hid Her Fear Under The Stairs 4
UK, 16min
Dir. Faye Jackson
A woman, whose fear consumes her, decided to take matters into her own hands, literally. Placing her fear where it can no longer be seen, but still heard. It serves her in the most unique way.  A compelling and creative self-help thriller, this film could easily be expanded into a feature.

Fantasia International Film Festival 2018 comes to a close tomorrow. We are already looking forward to next year!
