Women On Film – AWFJ’s Men We Love Awards – 2009

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists presents its second annual bouquet of Men We Love Awards.

For 2009, we again honor men who’ve consistently and generously supported AWFJ during the past year, as well as men who’ve shown extraordinary support for women who are working in the film industry.

We’re shouting out “We Love You” to (in alphabetical order):

• Jay Andrew Allen, for his invaluable assistance in maintaining our Website at www.awfj.org.
• Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, the Sony Pictures Classics helmers (along with Marcie Bloom) who’ve navigated Courtney Hunt‘s “Frozen River” to well-deserved triumphs and gave “Brick Lane“ its U.S. theatrical release.
• Josh Gewolb, Esq and Marcus H. Strock, Esq. for generously (and successfully) guiding AWFJ through the daunting process of obtaining our nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporate status.
• Jonathan Gray, Esq., for his savvy legal (and other) advice as one of the earliest and most active volunteers on our Board of Advisors.
• Frank Lovece for stepping up to help with organizing, running and documenting AWFJ events.
• Rod Lurie, for consistently writing and directing films with smart, complex and inspiring female leads, including 2008’s stirring “Nothing But The Truth.”
• Andy Ostroy, widower of slain filmmaker Adrienne Shelly and founder of the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, a non-profit organization established to help young women pursue careers in filmmaking.
• Richard Pena, who joined our Board of Advisors with unquestioning support.
• David Poland, for making AWFJ a presence on Movie City News, and for his ongoing honesty and directness in sharing his wisdom with us.
• Ray Pride, for frequently referring Movie City News readers to our women’s perspectives on film and the film industry. as presented in Women On Film, our online magazine at www.awfj.org.
• Lee Ringelheim and Brian Michels, owners of Circa Tabac, for generously sponsoring AWFJ’s the third annual EDA Awards and our first-ever EDA Awards celebration in December, 2008, and for creating our special awards cocktails to honor our winning films.
• Michael Rose for always being there to share his wisdom, help to resolve Internet issues and photograph AWFJ events.
• Stu VanAirsdale, whose online acknowledgments have focused attention of AWFJ and our goals.

We honor these men for showing respect to and demonstrating appreciation for women who make films and for women who write about them. We thank them. We salute them. We want the world to know we love them.
