Opening May 30, the AWFJ Movie of the Week is We Are The Best! This smart and funny film is a raucous coming-of-age tale about three teenage girls who form a punk band in ’80s Stockholm. Mohawk-sporting Klara (Mira Grosin) and her best friend Bobo (Mira Barkhammar) are rebels looking for a cause. Despite having no instruments—or discernible musical talent—the two form an all-girl punk band, recruiting their shy, classical guitar-playing schoolmate Hedvig (Liv LeMoyne) as the third wheel. Based on the graphic novel by Coco Moodysson, and directed by her husband, Lukas, the entertaining film puts a refreshing feminist spin on a usually male-centric genre. Read on…
AWFJ Movie of the Week Panelists Comments:
MaryAnn Johnson: My pick is We Are The Best!, the fantastic rock ‘n’ roll, coming-of-age flick about girls who form a punk band in Stockholm. It’s smart, funny, and brings a uniquely — and necessary — feminist spin to a story that has become classic… but has mostly been only about boys and men.
Pam Grady: Lukas Moodysson delivers his most exuberant and optimistic work in years along with an evocation of girl power and a loving homage to punk rock with We Are The Best!, an adaptation of his wife Coco’s graphic novel about three young teens who form a band.
Jennifer Merin:A thoroughly entertaining narrative in which Swedish teenage feminists demand equality through their music and friendship. Great story. Great characters. Great performances. Great message.
Kristy Puchko: This is a classic coming-of-age story that embraces the messiness and stubbornness of adolescence, delivering a drama that is alive with attitude, humor and heart. Read full review.
