AWFJ Movie of the Week, July 20-26: PIXELS

Opening July 24, the AWFJ Movie of the Week is Pixelsthe new family sci-fi actioner from seasoned director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Rent, Percy Jackson). The premise promises high-concept hi-jinx as, after misinterpreting video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, aliens attack the earth by taking the form of video game characters, so opening the door for a rag tag group of gaming aficionados to save the day for real. Read on…

Columbus has assembled a high-profile cast, including Michelle Monahan (True Detective), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Brian Cox (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) Sean Bean (Jupiter Ascending), Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters), Kevin James (Here Comes the Boom) – and Adam Sandler (The Cobbler) – to do the effects-driven battle with the extra terrestrial invaders. And while it’s no surprise that it’s a gang of dudes who take centre stage as the 80s arcade kings, Monahan is at least given the chance to get her teeth into the role of the army specialist drafted in to help kick some otherworldy ass.

AWFJ Movie of the Week Panelists Comments:

Anne Brodie: Pixels! After a spring and summer of heavy, earnest dramas, I’m ready for rampaging digits.
