AWFJ Movie of the Week, July 27-Aug. 2: LISTEN TO ME MARLON

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

Opening July 29, the AWFJ Movie of the Week is Listen to Me Marlon, a new documentary which uses audio recordings of Marlon Brando to tell the story of his incredible life and career. Documentary filmmaker Stevan Riley (Blue Blood, Fire In Babylon) was granted access to Brando’s personal archive, including hundreds of hours of audio Brando recorded over the course of his life, and expertly stitches these together with clips from the great man’s films. There are no talking heads, and no interviewees, just Brando guiding us, frankly and honestly, through his life, his work and the psychological demons which often threatened to overwhelm his unmatched talent. Read on…

This unique insight is given extra depth by Riley’s occasional use of a digital 3D rendering of Brando’s head, which the actor himself made in the 1980s, animated to speak Brando’s own words. Together with family photos and home movies, it makes for an intimate and compelling portrait of a legend.

AWFJ Movie of the Week Panelists Comments:

Pam Grady: A treasure trove of audiotapes yields a unique autobiographical portrait of one of cinema’s greatest actors, Marlon Brando. Augmented by home movies, film clips, and other archival materials, Listen to Me Marlon’s over 300 hours of recordings that date as far back as the 1940s reveal a frank, self-aware man, by turns funny, poignant, self-lacerating and beset by demons both inherited and of his own making.

Jennifer Merin: Stevan Riley’sListen to Me Marlon uses Brando’s own audio tapes, recorded throughout his tumultuous life and triumphant career, to profile the man behind the mystique. Brando was as fascinating in real life as he was on screen, and this documentary is a great way to get to know him up close and very personal.
