STANDING TALL, NO HOME MOVIE, MILES AHEAD and more Apr 1 Openers — Reviews by Jennifer Merin
In Standing Tall, Catherine Deneuve’s is brilliant as a French judge determined to save a juvenile delinquent from institutionalization. No Home Movie, Chantal Akerman’s last film before her untimely death, is a rich profile of her mother. Marianne Lambert’s documentary, I Don’t Belong Anywhere: The Cinema of Chantal Akerman, opens concurrently. Miles Ahead, Don Cheadle’s marvelous Miles Davis biopic, features Emayatzy Corinealdi’s beautiful performance as Frances Taylor, Davis’ first wife. Plus two documentaries Catching The Sun and Notown, about solar energy and clean water, respectively. And a fascinating essay film in Francofonia, a femme-centric road trip dramedy in Moments of Clarity and a fictional look at freedom of expression in public schools in God Is Not Dead 2.
