The latest comic book adaptation to hit summer screens is David Ayer’s hyperbolic super villain extravaganza. You would have to be in a coma to miss the veritable onslaught of marketing. Whether it’s strange stories about Ayer’s directorial methodology (read: manipulation) of his cast members, or the fact that the production had an on-set therapist — the film differentiates itself with a focus on the villains of the story. Read on…

The film is set in the DC Comic universe, with shadowy government agency rounding up a crew of the world’s worst criminals to save the earth, or die trying. Maybe both. The cast alone is something to witness — from Jared Leto’s leering, tattooed version of the Joker to Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, a killer cupcake, with a penchant for chaos. The most terrifying presence onscreen may just belong to Viola Davis as agent Amanda Waller, the mastermind of the entire scheme.

As the summer drags into the final fews of hot weather and bad behaviour, this nihilistic romp might be just the ticket. Let’s hope that Suicide Squad lives up to the hype.

AWFJ Movie of the Week Panelists Comments:

Neil Minow: Suicide Squad looks like the wildest ride of the summer.

Pam Grady: The Joker returns in the form of Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, but it is Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn that appears to be the one to stand out in a stacked deck of super villains in this ribald, ultra-violent comic book adaptation.
