This is a fictional story, yes, but it is about truth with a capital T, and about facts with a big ol’ F (you) to those who would like to deny the harsh realities of the lives of far too many people in what is supposedly one of the most advanced nations on the planet. Daniel Blake is lefty and loud and proud (and heartbreaking and infuriating with it). MaryAnn Johanson

MaryAnn Johanson is a freelance writer on film, TV, DVD, and pop culture from New York City and now based in London.
