MORBIUS – Review by T. J. Callahan
Morbius: I’d let Jared Leto bite my neck.
Jared Leto is in disguise again. He’s been The Joker and Paolo Gucci and now he’s part of the Marvel Comic Universe as Morbius — Dr. Michael Morbius, that is — a biochemist who is on a mission to cure a rare blood disorder with which he, himself, is afflicted. He develops a serum that’s a mix of human and bat DNA that looks like it’s going to be a miracle cure, but there’s one really noticeable side effect. Really noticeable. Dr. Morbius turns into a vampire. Oh, how I hate it when that happens. Your clothes don’t fit right, your appetite changes, and all of that bother, but at least Dr. Morbius is a vampire with super powers.
He is Dr. Morbius and he is Mr. Dracula. He’s the REAL Batman. And he becomes an original antihero in this origin story, trying to perfect his remedy to help others while trying to suppress his new and insistent urges to kill for blood.
Morbius is the most anemic of recent Marvel movies. The CGI and Matrix-like special effects are impressive, there are a couple of good jump scares and Oscar winner, Leto and co-star, Matt Smith try their best to sink their teeth into the script, but there are too many plot holes. Morbius could be walking dead on arrival at the box office. If this PG 13 flick is your type, stay for 2 mid credit scenes for a look at what the future brings. Ricky gives Morbius two restless eyes open. In theaters.
