WEEK IN WOMEN: Greta Gerwig’s BARBIE sets Box Office Records – Brandy McDonnell reports

Greta Gerwig’s eagerly awaited Barbie movie set multiple records in its July 21 opening weekend, and the pinktastic film is sitting pretty heading into its second weekend.

The blockbuster based on Mattel’s iconic doll opened with a dazzling $162 million at the North American box office over the July 21-23 weekend, giving Gerwig the record for the largest opening weekend ever for a female director, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Per Forbes, the initial weekend for Barbie zipped past the $153.4 million opening-weekend haul for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s 2019 superhero movie Captain Marvel, the $130.3 million first weekend take for Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck’s animated sequel Frozen II and $103.3 domestic opening of Patty Jenkins’ 2017 DC Comics tentpole “Wonder Woman.”

Gerwig’s latest movie also notched the biggest opening weekend of 2023 so far, surpassing the $146.3 million first frame for The Super Mario Bros. Movie,according to The Hollywood Reporter. Plus, it scored the largest three-day opening for a movie based on a toy — overshadowing the $115.9 million haul for 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon — and Warner Bros.’ biggest opening for a film that isn’t a sequel or adapted from DC Comics.
