IF: Nothing you love can ever be forgotten.

Twelve year old Bea (Cailey Fleming) is adjusting to the loss of her mother while she’s caring for her upbeat, but heartbroken father (John Krasinski). While spending the summer with her grandmother, Bea unexpectedly gains the power to see other people’s imaginary friends…their IFs. She makes it her mission to re-connect the forgotten IFs with their (now grown up) children and she’s healing herself in the process.

IF was conceived by John Krasinski (of The Office fame) as a lasting reminder to his daughters that life doesn’t always have to be fun, but it shouldn’t stop us from trying. He also took on the roles of director and co-star as well as the task of amassing a who’s who of live and voiceover cast and crew including fellow Office mate Steve Carell as Blue, the big purple IF.

Other stars include Ryan Reynolds, Matt Damon, Sam Rockwell, Bradley Cooper, Vince Vaughn and Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt. Academy Award winners Janusz Kaminski lensed the film and Michael Giacchino composed the music.

Krasinski has described the PG rated IF as a live action Pixar movie. The film has something for everyone although I think tweens and parents will like it best. Kids under 10 may not understand it all and get bored. Those without any sentimental bones in their bodies will no doubt fall sleep, as did my husband Ricky.

IF is about reminding us to cherish our memories. It’s a charmingly chaotic confection. I give it a 7 out of 10. The phlegmatic Ricky, just 👁 open.
