WEEK IN WOMEN: Lucy Walker’s MOUNTAIN QUEEN Debuts on Netflix – Brandy McDonnell reports

Two-time Academy Award nominee Lucy Walker has a new documentary, Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, that is debuting on July 31 on Netflix.

The film spotlights the two different lives of one extraordinary women, Lhakpa Sherpa, who works as a dishwasher at a Whole Foods in Connecticut, but who is also the first Nepali woman to climb Mount Everest and survive.

Once forced to conceal her gender to pursue her passion for mountain climbing, Lhakpa’s remarkable journey as she prepares for her 10th Everest summit, a new record for female mountaineers, is chronicled in Walker’s documentary, Mountain Queen.

In Lhakpa Sherpa’s low-altitude life in the United States, she faces a gamut of challenges as an immigrant, a single mother of two teenage daughters and a survivor of spousal abuse. All of these challenges are explored in the film, too. Continue reading on THE WEEK IN WOMEN

Brandy McDonnell writes features and reviews movies, music, events and the arts for The Oklahoman, Oklahoma's statewide newspaper, and NewsOK.com, the state's largest news Web site. Raised on a farm near Lindsay, Okla., she started her journalism career in seventh grade, when she was elected reporter for her school's 4-H Club. She attended Oklahoma State University, where she worked for The Daily O'Collegian and earned her journalism degree with honors.
