Blink Twice: Forgetting is a gift

Zoë Kravitz makes her directorial debut with Blink Twice, a film which she also wrote. It stars her fiancé, Channing Tatum, as tech billionaire Slater King. The megalomaniac invites a group of men and a bevy of beautiful women to vacation on his Love Island one Midsommar day, but the ladies soon realize THEY are on The Menu and they can’t Get Out.

Casting her shadow out from under any “Nepo Baby” moniker she may get because she’s the daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, the TV and film actress does her best Jordan Peele impersonation with this psychologically disturbing male fantasy thriller that turns into Female empowerment.

In Blink Twice, Frida, a cocktail waitress, played by Naomi Ackie, can’t deflect the sparks that are flying between her and the wildly rich and handsome Slater after she serves him at his fundraising gala. He invites her and her girlfriend to join him and some friends on his private island paradise for a week of no phones, just decadence and debauchery. The guests are distracted with beautiful outfits and champagne, Polaroid pictures and fancy meals. But is the fantasy too good to be true? Naomi begins to question the reality of it all, and her intuition may have just saved her life.

Kravitz has assembled a supporting cast of seasoned veterans including Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan, Haley Joel Osment, Simon Rex and an extra creepy Geena Davis. They all work and play well with each other helping Blink Twice meld into a thought provoking thriller that serves up some nervous laughter with a side of gore.

Blink Twice won’t propel Kravitz to the top of the award winning director’s list, but she has a good eye and a strong creative vision making this film a solid first effort. Plus there’s the charming Channing Tatum. Blink Twice gets a 7 out of 10 on the TeejFlixometer.
