The Alliance of Women Film Journalists highlights movies made by and about women. With a vigilant eye toward current releases, we maintain an interactive record of films that are pertinent to our interests. Be they female-made or female-centric productions, they are films that represent a wide range of women’s stories and present complex female characters. As such, they are movies that will most likely be reviewed on AWFJ.org and will qualify for consideration for our annual EDA Awards, celebrating exceptional women working in film behind and in front of the camera. Our members are feature writers, columnists and regular contributors to a variety of media outlets and many of us publish regularly on the festival circuit. Our critical voices are widespread and diverse. We invite you to join us in tracking weekly releases of particular interest. And we welcome information about new films that will help us to keep our records updated and our critics alert. Below is a concise list of new releases set for the week of January 6 – 12 that are of particular interest. Titles highlighted in red have links to full reviews:  

Tuesday, January 7

  • Alone in Venice – Freestyle Digital Media (VOD) – USA – Drama written and directed by Jules East. A modern reversal of Death in Venice, a young aspiring actor is waiting for his director in Venice while questioning what love is.

  • Good Side of Bad – Freestyle Digital Media (VOD) – USA – Drama co-written and directed by Alethea Root. When a young photographer has a severe mental break, her siblings come together to help her heal.

Friday, January 10

  • Diane Warren: Relentless – Greenwich Entertainment (Cinemas) – USA – Documentary directed by Bess Kargman. The untold story of a legendary songwriter. Featuring Cher, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Gloria Estefan, Kesha, LeAnn Rimes, and more.

  • Eat the Night – Altered Innocence (Cinemas) – France – Drama co-written and directed by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel. Young drug dealer Pablo and his sister Appoline bond over an online game called Darknoon. Pablo falls for Night, neglecting his sister. While Appoline finishes the game, Pablo and Night become embroiled in a dangerous gang conflict.

  • Every Little Thing – Kino Lorber (Cinemas) – Australia – Documentary written and directed by Sally Aitken. A woman in Hollywood cares for injured hummingbirds, experiencing personal growth as she witnesses their fragility and resilience.

  • Extremely Unique Dynamic – Strand Releasing (Cinemas) – USA – Dramedy co-written and directed by Ivan Leung, Harrison Xu and Katherine Dudas. During their final weekend together, two best friends test the limits of their friendship while making a triple-meta film.

  • Timestalker – Level 33 Entertainment (Cinemas) – UK – Dramedy written and directed by Alice Lowe. The hapless heroine Agnes reincarnates every time she makes the same mistake: falling in love with the wrong man.
