WEEK IN WOMEN: Female Filmmakers at OKC’s deadCenter Film Festival – Brandy McDonnell reports

Oklahoma’s largest film festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary with an eclectic lineup of 200 independent features and short films — including 25 world premieres — and a roster of nearly 40 Sooner State filmmakers, as well as additional moviemakers from around the globe. The deadCenter Film Festival is June 11-15 at various Oklahoma City venues and the program includes panels, workshops, parties and networking opportunities for filmmakers and movie lovers.

The festival’s silver anniversary is getting an extra shine as deadCenter has been designated this year as an Oscar-qualifying film festival in three categories: best live action short film, best animated short and, new starting this year, best documentary short.

Given Oklahoma’s unique history, it should come as no surprise that this year’s deadCenter lineup boasts several feature and short films from Native American filmmakers, plus the fest’s programming team has selected a strong slate of projects directed and/or produced by women.
