TOGETHER – Review by T.J. Callahan
Together: Whatever you do, don’t drink the water!
Destined to become a cult classic, Together is the most magnetic film you’ll see all year. It also may be the weirdest…but I mean that in the best possible way. Starring real life married pair, Allison Brie and Dave Franco, Together is the body horror story of an engaged couple on the brink of a breakup who decide to move to the country to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Soon after their arrival, they have an eerie encounter on a hike in the woods that not only transforms their lives, but also their flesh.
Together is the brainchild of writer and first time director, Michael Shanks. It’s co-produced by its stars, Brie and Franco and is one of those movies you’ll either love or hate, but either way, you’ll definitely have something to discuss afterward. There’s cult vibes with shades of Greek Tragedy, Jekyll and Hyde and co-dependency culminating in a fantastical ending set to the Spice Girls.
There are minimal jump scares in Together. It’s a slow burn that relies on the supernatural and physical horror with humor and dialogue you’d never expect to hear in a scary movie. You may find yourself asking, “when is something going to happen?”, but the payoff is worth the wait.
Together is about a man and a woman in a sticky situation who couldn’t split even if they wanted to. This film is the ultimate in intimacy and it gets an 8 on the TeejFlixometer…mostly for the unnerving sheer surprise of it all. You’ll scream with fright and laughter.
