Dame Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut, My Mother’s Wedding, will open in theaters August 8, almost two years after it had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.Inspired by her own family history, Scott Thomas co-wrote the film with her husband, John Micklethwait. She also co-stars.

Formerly titled “North Star,” the film follows three sisters who return to their childhood home for a momentous weekend: the third wedding of their twice-widowed mother, Diana Frost (Scott Thomas). The three daughters are from very different walks of life: Georgina (Emily Beecham) is a hospice nurse; Victoria (Sienna Miller) is a Hollywood star; and Katherine (Scarlett Johansson) is a captain in the Royal Navy. Over the weekend, the family gathers to celebrate the new marriage, but mother and daughters alike are forced to revisit the past and confront the future, all with help from a colorful group of unexpected wedding guests.

Scott Thomas made her first foray into writing and directing with My Mother’s Wedding, after building an esteemed career as an actress, appearing in iconic films from Four Weddings and a Funeral and Gosford Park to Only God Forgives and Darkest Hour. On the London stage, she has earned five Olivier Award nominations, winning in 2008 for her stunning performance in the Royal Court’s revival of The Seagull.

In recognition of her many achievements, the British actress received an Order of the British Empire in 2003 and was awarded a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2015 for her services to drama.

“Kristin’s directorial debut is a poignant and heartwarming exploration of the beautiful chaos of family, brought to life by a stellar cast led by Scarlett, Sienna, and Emily. We are thrilled to bring this exceptional film to North American audiences,” said Peter Jarowey of Vertical, the film’s distributor. Continue reading on THE WEEK IN WOMEN
