SOLO MIO – Review by Susan Kamyab

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Kevin James returns to the romantic comedy scene in Solo Mio, a light-hearted, charming tale surrounded by the scenic backdrop of Italy.

James stars as Matt Taylor, a man who finds himself at a loss when his fiancée leaves him at the alter in Rome. With their honeymoon already planned and paid for, he moves forward with the trip and tries his best to take pleasure in the all-inclusive honeymoon package. Thankfully, two, fairly odd, couples taking part in the package notice Matt is single. They take him under their wings and Matt quickly forms an unlikely friendship with the couples as a fifth wheel. However, five becomes six when Gia, the owner of a small coffee shop, takes an interest in Matt.

As a romcom fan, this one is satisfactory. It may not be on par with last year’s Materialists or Eternity, which give more of a refreshing spin on the genre, but Solo Mio is just as delightful. AND with predictability comes comfort and nostalgia. While the film is a bit formulaic – the script, though safe, does touch on a fear many of us have had; feeling as though you may never get married or have the family you might desire. You’ll feel for Matt every step of his journey, from his heartbreak to him discovering his worth, thanks to James’ heartfelt performance. And while James does a fantastic job, it is Gia, played by Nicole Grimaudo, who audiences will fall in love with.

When Gia and Matt meet is when the film really starts to pull you in. Their chemistry is authentic and sweet. You can’t help but root for them both. It is her attraction to Matt that drives the message of the film — being open to change and second chances, rediscovering yourself, and finding what truly makes you happy. Solo Mio is a breezy, heartfelt watch that’s sure to bring a smile to your face.
