WEEK IN WOMEN: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s THE BRIDE to haunt theaters in March – Brandy McDonnell reports
Two-time Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal’s long-awaited feature film The Bride, an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, arrives in theaters on March 6. The movie is part of the Filmed for IMAX program and will be released in IMAX as well as standard formats.
Written and directed by Gyllenhaal, her steampunk take on the 1935 horror classic Bride of Frankenstein is the follow-up to her 2021 Academy Award-nominated Netflix drama The Lost Daughter.
Gyllenhaal’s star-studded sophomore directorial effort includes Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley in the title role, Academy Award winner Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster, Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Gyllenhaal’s brother), Primetime Emmy Award nominee Peter Sarsgaard (the writer-director’s husband), Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz, Primetime Emmy winner Julianne Hough and five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening.
Set in the 1930s, The Bride follows a lonely Frankenstein (Bale, with whom the writer-director co-starred in 2008’s The Dark Knight), who travels to Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!
The Bride is Gyllenhaal’s second project as a writer-director, after the psychological drama “The Lost Daughter,” an adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel that she penned and helmed. The movie earned three nominations at the 94th Academy Awards: best actress for Olivia Colman, best supporting actress for Buckley and best adapted screenplay for Gyllenhaal.
