WEEK IN WOMEN: Debbie Horsfield’s THE FORSYTES comes to MASTERPIECE on PBS – Brandy McDonnell reports
Two-time BAFTA nominee Debbie Horsfield’s “The Forsytes, a new reimagining of John Galsworthy’s Forsyte is coming to “Masterpiece” on PBS. The first season of six episodes, all penned by Horsfield, follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition and betrayal. The U.S. premiere of The Forsytes” is set for 9 p.m. Eastern Time/8 p.m. Central Time Sunday, March 22, only on “Masterpiece” on PBS.
“It was an honor to be asked to write a bold new reimagining of Galsworthy’s epic saga. Our show is in part a prequel to the events of the first book, but also an opportunity to expand the world and place the women of the family center stage. It’s a love letter to the original story while offering an exciting new perspective,” Horsfield said in a statement.
The Forsytes (previously titled The Forsyte Saga) reunites “Masterpiece” with acclaimed British screenwriter Horsfield and the UK production company Mammoth Screen, the team behind the global television hit Poldark. The stellar ensemble cast for The Forsytes includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Millie Gibson, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Joshua Orpin, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.
Susanne Simpson, executive producer for “Masterpiece,” said she’s proud of having commissioned “a new, original take” on Galsworthy’s iconic Forsyte novels. The Forsyte Saga was previously adapted as a Hollywood film in 1949 and for television in 1967 and 2002. The 2002 series also aired on “Masterpiece” on PBS. Continue reading on THE WEEK IN WOMEN.
