CALL JANE (Sundance FF 2022) – Review by Lauren Anderson

Call Jane tells the story of sisterhood among a group of women aptly called “The Janes.” They provided abortions at a time when an all-male Supreme Court forbade women from getting them legally. The film is set in the late 1960s, but the story couldn’t be more timely today with the Supreme Court considering rolling back what Roe v. Wade accomplished.

Breeders is a horror/thriller that asks us to examine how far we’ll go to feed our vanity. A ruthless businesswoman abducts a young women in a gruesome bio-hacking experiment to reverse the aging process. But when Mia goes to investigate, she finds herself trapped, branded, and tortured in an underground medical facility funded by her husband. Directed by a man and written by a woman, Breeders presents an interesting female perspective. Is looking young really all that important? Moreover, what do the pressures of wanting a child do to a woman?

Don’t Look Up is a whirlwind of a movie. The Adam McKay film follows Kate Dibiasky and Dr. Mindy, two astronomers, who find themselves at the center a media frenzy while they’re attempting to warn mankind of a massive comet that’s hurtling towards Earth. While the narrative of this movie is intended to be humorous, it’s also eerily reflective of the way humanity could react if something like this were actually to happen.

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME – Review by Lauren Anderson

In No Way Home, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker finds himself in a world where everyone knows his name and believes he murdered Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio. To try and right his wrongs and give the people he loves a second go at life, Peter connects with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the hopes of turning back time. In doing so, everyone Peter knows and loves will lose memory of who he is, but Peter’s willing to make that sacrifice. After a botched time-turning spell, there’s a glitch in the multiverse, setting us up for one of the most engaging Spider-Man movies to date.
