AWFJ EDA Award 2025 Winners – Jennifer Merin reports

AWFJ always focuses on and supports women’s contributions in all aspects of film production, and we will continue to boost women in film not only during awards season, but throughout the year. For this awards season, we are pleased that women have won several ‘Best Of’ awards in our non-gender specific categories, but we also realize how important our ‘Female Focus’ awards are in recognizing and honoring the extraordinary work of female creatives. This year there was a female forward trend in filmmaking. AWFJ tracked more than 500 femme-helmed and/or femme-centric films made and/or distributed in 2025, but most of them were small-budget indie productions that, despite their excellence, don’t stand a chance at receiving one of the major awards– or any awards for that matter. We hope the female forward trend will continue in 2026. Meanwhile, we congratulate all of the 2025 Eda Award winners.

AWFJ honors female creatives in non-gender specific awards categories and in unique Female Focus categories designated for women only. In this year’s Female Focus sction, Sorry, Baby filmmaker Eva Victor squares off with If I had Legs I’d Kick You‘s Mary Bronstein for both Best Woman Director and Best Female Screenwriter, with One Battle After Another‘s cast-mates Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor among those vying for the Best Women’s Breakthrough Performance Award.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists is pleased to announce the 2025 EDA Awards categories. Celebrating our 18th annual awards season, we present EDA Awards in 20 categories divided into two sections, the BEST OF AWARDS and the FEMALE FOCUS AWARDS. Nominees in each category are determined by AWFJ’s current members who submit nominating ballots. There are currently 88 voting AWFJ members who are based across the United States and Canada, as well as overseas in the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Serbia and Sweden.

For the past 18 years, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) has presented annual EDA Awards, representing professional women critics’ collective perspectives on movies and cinema culture in the movie awards arena, where female critics and critical opinion are still greatly underrepresented. AWFJ honors female creatives in non-gender specific awards categories and in unique Female Focus categories designated for women only. 2024 was an exceptional year with many women playing major creative roles in high profile projects. AWFJ always focuses on and supports women’s contributions in all aspects of film production, and we are delighted that this year’s AWFJ EDA Awards honor women creatives in six of our ten non-gendered BEST OF categories, as well as in all of our Female Focus categories.

AWFJ EDA Awards @ Whistler Film Festival 2024 – Jennifer Merin reports

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists and Whistler Film Festival are proud to announce the winners of the AWFJ EDA Awards for Best Female-Directed Feature and Best Female-Directed Short at Whistler Film Festival 2024. The EDA Award winners were announced at the Whistler Film Festival awards ceremony on Sunday, December 8, 2024. This is the twelfth consecutive year of the partnership between AWFJ and WFF to recognize and honor the work of female filmmakers whose work is screened at the festival. This year AWFJ EDA Awards were presented in two categories: Best Female-Directed Feature and Best Female-Directed Short. WFF nominated five feature length films and six short films for consideration by AWFJ’s jurors, all of whom are members of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists.
