Asif Kapadia’s new docufiction is an intriguing concept hampered by clumsy and patronising execution. 2073 is supposed to be a call to action but instead is a barrage of despair. People who are aware of much of what the documentary is laying out will feel the format is simplistic. People who don’t know much will either not care or have limited reference to Chris Marker’s work. People in the middle with be left with a feeling of disenfranchisement and wonder why the documentary offers no solutions except, “Do something!” – but the doing something is what? Conscious raising groups? Petitions? Protests? Getting arrested? Not seeking medical help because your data is being sold? Working out if your food is lab grown? Or just maybe taking a walk – who knows? Filmmaker Asif Kapadia doesn’t.
