Disneyland is billed as “The Happiest Place on Earth,” but as the documentary The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales contends, that’s a fantasy that’s very far from reality — especially for many who work at the theme park. The documentary explores a wide-ranging array of themes. Or, to use the Disneyland model, lands — from the Fantasyland of happy “cast members” to the ominous Tomorrowland of employees who wonder how they’ll ever feed their kids and pay their rent in pricey Southern California. Abigail Disney’s Fork Films is dividng $625,000 in grants among 16 new documentaries that align with the company’s dedication to promoting peacebuilding, human rights, and social justice. All are directed and or produced by women. Selected from 500 applicants, the chosen films address topics ranging from refugee and immigration stories, to incarceration, civil rights, disability rights and media depictions of transgender people, as well as other timely topics. The unprecedented number of applications indicates growing demand for nonfiction storytelling in this turbulent time

Abigail Disney’s Armour of Light, an enlightening documentary, follows an Evangelical minister and the mother of a slain teenage son to point out the contradictions between Evangelical Christian ideology and second amendment advocacy by Evangelical Christians. Muffy Meyers’ Making Rounds follows two highly regarded cardiologists as they train young doctors to listen to patients with heart and to diagnose them at their bedsides rather than at computers.
