A few years ago, writer/producer Adele Lim wanted to get into directing. She had 17 years of working in writers rooms, producing and show running in tv, and co-writing two wildly successful feature films under her belt, but she questioned whether she had enough experience. Crazy Rich Asians, which she co-wrote, was the first major studio film to feature a majority cast of Asian descent since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club. Raya and the Last Dragon, which she co-wrote, was released in 2021. The animated feature brought Disney’s first Southeast Asian princess to the screen. Her many female filmmaker friends and Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu reminded her she was ready.

Ladies who raunch are having the times of their lives thanks to the perverted minds of writer/director Adele Lim who takes an “ if you can’t beat ‘em, join ’em” foray into the usually all male unapologetically explicit R rated comedy. But Joy Ride isn’t a one-way trip. Lim brings the venture full circle as the ladies explore not just their sexuality, but stereotypes, friendship and belonging — and learning how to appreciate who they are. Joy Ride is full throttle and full frontal and just when you think it’s an irreverent comedy on cruise control, it turns down the road to redemption with sparks of subtle social commentary and soul.

Raya and the Last Dragon is definitely a fun, exciting animated feature, with most entertainment found in the vocal interpretations and endlessly gorgeous visuals, that bring the film to a compelling level, and raise the plot, which, though it offers exciting action, a fresh perspective, and Disney’s first Southeast Asian princess, ultimately fits the ‘Disney Magic’ formula‘ and business as usual.
