SEVEN VEILS – Review by Lynn Venhaus

It’s rather fitting that a contemporary movie tackles a controversial Biblical opera, with its shocking and erotic elements, as an exploration of female roles in the arts, workplace, relationships, and families. Atom Egoyan’s film, Seven Veils, has a lot to say about female agency, appropriation and how unaddressed trauma will always rear its head in later situations. In fact, one can argue, too much to say, while it blends a live opera production with multiple backstories. Think of it as a sad ballad.

Cameron Bailey wants to make this clear: The Toronto International Film Festival is happening this year. The 48th annual TIFF is set to run September 7 – 17, despite the labour action that could potentially affect who shows up and what films are shown. The festival has been in recovery mode after two years of COVID, so it was a bold and welcome statement from CEO Cameron Bailey some weeks ago that TIFF would return to being fully in-person this year for the first time since 2019.

GUEST OF HONOUR – Review by Carol Cling

Like many of Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s psychological dramas, Guest of Honour focuses on such themes as guilt, repentance and redemption, this time filtered through the sins of a father — and his daughter. Yet as this slice-and-dice script bounces around in time and tone, it sets up thematic revelations that, upon arrival, seem more arbitrary than artful.
