Cinematic love letters to the art and magic of movies are common enough and more often than not, are told from the perspective of a young boy, eager to experience all the technicolor adventures on the big screen have to offer. With The Movie Teller (La Contadora de Películas), Danish filmmaker Lone Scherfig has not only gifted to audiences a moving, captivating ode to both movies and the power they have to create and bind communities, but one told–for a change–from the perspective of an imaginative young girl with a talent for storytelling herself.

In Final Cut, Michel Hazanavicius’ French-i-fied remake of One Cut of the Dead, the premise is both simple and very complicated. Director Rémi (Romain Duris, definitely MVP of the film), is known for his productions being cheap and decent. He is approached by producers of a new channel, “Z”, to make a low-budget, one-take, 30-odd minute zombie movie. He accepts, and all hell, and accompanying zombies, break loose on the day of the shoot. That’s the simple part. The more complicated part is the layered storytelling, and how reality and fiction overlap. That’s all any critic should say if they want to keep their review spoiler-free.

German director Jan Zabeil’s beautifully crafted sophomore narrative feature, Three Peaks, is a truly disturbing film. It’s a horror story without gimmicks, ghosts, ghouls or goblins. There is no paranormality. In fact, the story revolves around a very normal modern threesome — two adults and a child — who take a family vacation in a relatively isolated cabin in a beautiful and pristine mountain setting.
