Lexi Alexander, who wrote and directed this post-apocalyptic spin on martial arts championships, is herself a former World Kickboxing Champion. Absolute Dominion looks and feels authentic. The film has a thing or two to say about the pointless and tragic violence that continues around the world in the name of religion. There are elements that make it particularly timely, as it relates to heads of government manipulating or flouting laws for their own benefit. For lovers of martial arts and post-apocalyptic fare, as well as for folks looking for a “something old, something new, something borrowed” on the screen, Absolute Dominion fits the bill.

Drop is high tech Hitchcock. Slow burn suspense for the social media savvy where everyone is a suspect. Director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) plays a game of chess with pawns aplenty. Every character is put in the line of fire whether they deserve to be or not. While Landon doesn’t let Drop fall flat, the film lacks buoyancy. The audience treads water for the first hour as the characters are introduced and the build up simmers. The last 30 minutes is a smash…literally.

It tethers friends and neighbors together in a fun, regular ritual at the community hall which forms the foundations of their day-to-day lives. They share their highs and lows, accomplishments and losses, struggles and triumphs. If someone is going through a tough time, the others do what they can to help. They cut each other’s hair. They fix each other’s cars. They listen to each other’s family dramas, never afraid to speak up and call someone out if they are the one being the jerk.

Two-time Golden Globe winner Elisabeth Moss will star in and produce a film adaptation of former Congresswoman Katie Hill’s memoir She Will Rise: Becoming a Warrior in the Battle for True Equality. The Emmy Award winner is teaming with writer Michael Seitzman (North Country) and producer Jason Blum for the streaming film.
