The consequences of misunderstandings and painful secrets become achingly clear in director/co-writer Tessa Blake’s family drama If I Tell You. Based on the book <em>Closed Doors by Lisa O’Donnell and old mostly through the eyes of 12-year-old Michael (Etienne Kellici) — who doesn’t realize why his usually happy household is on the verge of falling apart one otherwise idyllic Midwestern summer — it’s an earnest story about finding hope amid darkness.

Austin Butler takes the lead and runs with it in Caught Stealing, a slice-of-the-nineties crime drama about a New York City bartender on a wrong-man odyssey with the Russian mob and more on his tail. Though not a home run, Caught Stealing has twists that surprise Hank as much as the audience. It’s diverting enough as a crime story but a more satisfying study of a character caught in the clutch, with a resolution that covers all the bases.

Caught Stealing tries to please all audiences. There’s criminal activity, violence, a little romance, motherly and grandmotherly love, Russian henchmen, Orthodox Jewish gangsters performing mitzvahs while concealing their tzitzit and silencers, a Puerto Rican kingpin, corrupt police and a sweet cat who’s poop is the root of all evil.

Longshots do happen – look no further than Dolly De Leon of Triangle of Sadness who catapulted her career with BAFTA and Golden Globes nominations for Best Supporting Actress in 2023. Another name that comes to mind is Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio who nailed a Best Actress Oscar nomination in 2019.

It’s basically the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century, delving into the origins, backstories and personal challenges facing familiar characters.
