DROP – Review by T.J. Callahan

Drop is high tech Hitchcock. Slow burn suspense for the social media savvy where everyone is a suspect. Director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) plays a game of chess with pawns aplenty. Every character is put in the line of fire whether they deserve to be or not. While Landon doesn’t let Drop fall flat, the film lacks buoyancy. The audience treads water for the first hour as the characters are introduced and the build up simmers. The last 30 minutes is a smash…literally.

HEART EYES – Review by Nadine Whitney

There aren’t many films that have tried to blend the romantic comedy with a slasher film (zom-coms, vampire-coms, even ghost-coms are quite common), unless it falls into obvious parody terrain. Heart Eyes is homage first and parody second. Featuring a (non) couple at the centre of the film who are easy to root for with their breezy back and forth repartee and their ‘impossible to kill’ final couple dynamic. Heart Eyes can skirt a little too close to being self-satisfied with some all too obvious plotting, but that’s the point. Satirical, metatextual, and a loving throwback to the movies people grew up with, Heart Eyes isn’t deep or difficult. It’s good, clean, nasty and viscerally violent, fun. If Halloween and Happy Death Day sit next to 10 Things I Hate About You and Crazy, Stupid, Love on your shelf of favourites, Heart Eyes is just the ticket.
