The End of Oak Street is Land of the Lost meets Jurassic Park with a premise not unlike an episode of the 1960’s television show Outer Limits. Director David Robert Mitchell, along with producer J.J. Abrams, brings the jump scares and the giggles, an extreme attention to detail, a pounding soundtrack, special effects, a committed cast and dinosaurs galore elevating the film’s retro feel from old school fright to a sci-fi summer scream. Not that there aren’t plot holes in the worm holes that send the Pratts and their neighbors into the middle of an extinct world, but the Twilight Zone type story keeps moving and keeps surprising at only an hour and 40 minutes.

Count Rostov’s saga begins in 1921, after he’s caught in the Russian Revolution which designated former nobility as enemies of the state. A Bolshevik tribunal sentences him to spend the rest of his life within the confines of Moscow’s Hotel Metropol – not in the elegant suite he’d previously occupied but in a drafty attic, formerly used as servants’ quarters. Should he ever leave, he will be shot on sight. Haunted by memories of his bucolic past and taunted by Osip (Johnny Harris) from the Russian Secret Police, Count Rostov is soon befriended by precocious nine year-old Nina Kulikova (Alexa Goodall), who has explored every nook and cranny of the hotel, showing him secret passageways and locked rooms filled with confiscated treasures.

Twenty-year-old Daughter (Clara McGregor) is on an unwanted road trip with forty-seven-year-old Father (Ewan McGregor). Earlier that day, she almost died from an overdose, so the estranged pair are driving through New Mexico so she can find the will to live again by resuming her painting. Instead of rebuking her, easygoing, understanding Father attempts to connect with her because he is a recovering alcoholic. Along the way, eccentric characters seize the spotlight and break up the monotonous plot which revolves around daddy and addiction issues. Real life father and daughter, Ewan and Clara McGregor, project their real-life troubles onto the big screen in Bleeding Love.

Shows how little we know about our parents, especially how little Raymond and Ray know; if their father had a chance, he would probably impregnate every woman he ever dated! Even though the brothers have nothing good to say about him, it’s their father’s friends and acquaintances who are fond of him. Maybe their father was a better friend, a good lover, but never a good parent. It’s something the brothers must explore in order to find a way to cure themselves from the hatred they have buried in their heart and begin their new life with a new chapter.
