THE MIDNIGHT SKY – Review by Diane Carson

Two storylines compete for attention in director George Clooney’s sci-fi film The Midnight Sky. The central plotline begins with onscreen titles: Arctic Circle, 2049, three weeks after what is called the Event. That means Earth is now uninhabitable from an unspecified cause. However, the astronomer scientist Augustine Lofthouse and eight-year-old stowaway Iris survive in an Arctic research station.

THE MIDNIGHT SKY – Review by Susan Granger

Part outer-space epic/part bleak Arctic survival story, George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky follows a lonely astrophysicist as he races to stop American astronauts from returning to Earth after a global catastrophe. When the maintenance crew of a remote outpost departs to face doomsday with their loved ones, terminally-ill Dr. Augustine Lofthouse (Clooney) remains at his post, eating a microwaved meal in the deserted cafeteria.

THE AERONAUTS – Review by Diane Carson

Some breathtaking events seem absolutely perfect for film, and that is certainly true for The Aeronauts. Set in 1862 England, the suspenseful, thrilling story goes with James Glaisher and Emilia Wren, adventurers determined to advance science and meteorology while also setting a new altitude record for a gas balloon, above 36,000 feet, with no auxiliary, pressurized breathing apparatus.

ON THE BASIS OF SEX – Review by Lois Alter Mark

On the Basis of Sex is the back story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg became notorious by winning a landmark case that prevented discrimination, well, on the basis of sex. The fact that she won that case by defending a man was brilliant, and the fact that her beloved husband, Marty (Armie Hammer), brought her the case is couple goals, for sure.

ON THE BASIS OF SEX – Review by Diana Saenger

On the Basis of Sex, written by Daniel Stiepleman and directed by Mimi Leder is intriguing and the cast of Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Kathy Bates, Justin Theroux, and Sam Waterson really bring this story to life. The film is an inspiring drama and already gaining award nominations. I really enjoyed learning about this true story and how hard Ruth worked for women’s rights and is a must see!

ON THE BASIS OF SEX – Review by MaryAnn Johanson

On the Basis of Sex’s hint-of-racy title fronts a just-pretty-okay cinematic experience that coasts on the awesomeness of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I might wish that Sex was, well, sexier — more adventurous, more meaty, more demanding of the viewer and of its terrific cast — but I’ll take this. Coasting on Notorious RBG is some incredible coasting indeed, and the ride here is of the solidly crowd-pleasing variety, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

ON THE BASIS OF SEX – Review by Martha K Baker

Last year’s documentary, RBG, prepared audiences for this year’s feature film, On the Basis of Sex. Whereas the stirring documentary covers the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, the feature film covers her early, ceiling-breaking case of a man denied a tax exemption that would have been granted were he female.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK January 4, 2019: ON THE BASIS OF SEX

motw logo 1-35Most superhero origin stories don’t involve late-night typewriter sessions and legal arguments — but Ruth Bader Ginsburg is no ordinary superhero. Director Mimi Leder’s On the Basis of Sex offers viewers a glimpse of RBG’s life before she became notorious, when she was “just” a smart, tenacious lawyer (as embodied by Felicity Jones) who was determined to fight for gender equality.

ON THE BASIS OF SEX – Review by Susan Wloszczyna

As biopics go, On the Basis of Sex can seem almost as old school as some of the laws that its worthy subject spent her career objecting to and sought to correct. That would be Ruth Bader Ginsberg, as the film is meant to celebrate her 25th year as the second female Supreme Court Justice. But as we watch RBG blossom into the notorious crusader against gender bias that she was born to be, one wishes that the film took a few more chances in its approach to such an incredibly brave and smart woman whose super power was her cogent ability to state her arguments – a skill she eventually perfects in Sex just before the credits roll.
