Nominees for 2025 AWFJ EDA Awards – Jennifer Merin reports

Since 2006, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) has presented annual EDA Awards, representing professional women critics’ collective perspectives on movies and cinema culture in the movie awards arena, where female critics and critical opinion are still greatly underrepresented. AWFJ honors female creatives in non-gender specific awards categories and in unique Female Focus categories designated for women only. In this year’s Female Focus sction, Sorry, Baby filmmaker Eva Victor squares off with If I had Legs I’d Kick You‘s Mary Bronstein for both Best Woman Director and Best Female Screenwriter, with One Battle After Another‘s cast-mates Chase Infiniti and Teyana Taylor among those vying for the Best Women’s Breakthrough Performance Award.

AWFJ EDA Awards Categories 2025

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists is pleased to announce the 2025 EDA Awards categories. Celebrating our 18th annual awards season, we present EDA Awards in 20 categories divided into two sections, the BEST OF AWARDS and the FEMALE FOCUS AWARDS. Nominees in each category are determined by AWFJ’s current members who submit nominating ballots. There are currently 88 voting AWFJ members who are based across the United States and Canada, as well as overseas in the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Serbia and Sweden.

HotDocs2023: Feminist Festival Wrap – Emma Badame reports

Hot Docs International Film Festival has long been a fabulous showcase of work from female filmmakers, and its 2023 line-up was no different. After achieving gender parity in 2018, this year the festival hosted a slate of world and North American premieres, director panel discussions, and networking events, there was plenty for film fans and industry members alike to take in as part of the festival’s 30th anniversary. The yearly, Toronto-based festival has been transparent about their goals of equity and inclusion, especially over the last 10 years. Hot Docs pledged “commitment to equity and inclusiveness in all aspects of the organization.” While they talk the talk, the organization clearly walks the walk when it comes to their programming too.
