The end of the world is probably nigh, what with climate change and the state of global politics and all. Luckily, Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin will make you laugh about it. The big question with his newest feature, Rumours, is whether it’s funnier for a Canadian audience. Certainly, there will be bits appreciated more by those viewing north of the 49th parallel. In Rumours — Canadian spelling, people — co-directed with Evan and Galen Johnson, Maddin zooms in on G7 leaders at a summit meeting in Germany.

Manitoban director Matthew Rankin is an alchemist, who along with his friend and mentor, Guy Maddin reshapes Winnipeg into a mythic place they can reconfigure through dialogue with lost cinematic traditions. His previous film, The Twentieth Century, was an imagined biography of Canada’s longest serving Prime Minister Mackenzie King, stylised somewhere between a peek-a-boo pre-code silent and a Soviet era propaganda film. Universal Language starts a conversation with Iranian film, especially that of Abbas Kiarostami in the late 1970s to the mid 1980s.
