With social discussion trending on solidarity and collective bargaining, and focusing on what’s at stake for union members walking the picket lines to preserve their jobs, Labor Day celebrations rise to a new level of relevance. Thus far this year, 170 official labor actions have been recorded and there were a total of 345 official actions in 2024, according to the Cornell University Labor Action Tracker. The power of collective bargaining will determine how successful the unions will be in their demands for fair compensation and safe working conditions for their members. This Labor Day, celebrate workers by watching documentaries and truth-based narrative features about the lives of labor leaders and union actions that reflect positive change. While millions of movie lovers and fans whose lives are shaped to some extent by cinema are watching to see how the WGA and SAG/AFTRA union negotiations will play out, this is an opportune time for a first, second or umpteenth look at movies — narrative and/or documentary — that center on labor negotiations for union members to attain fair wages, job security, worker benefits and safe conditions — all of the core issues at the heart of the WGA and SAG/AFTRA demands — in a wide range of industries that shape our lives as much as the movies do.
