WEEK IN WOMEN: Rita Moreno honored at Academy Museum Gala – Brandy McDonnell reports

Rita Moreno will be honored at the fourth annual Academy Museum Gala Oct. 19 in Los Angeles. The Icon Award, to be presented to Moreno, celebrates an artist whose career has had a significant global cultural impact. During her more than 80-year career, she has won all four of the most prestigious awards in show business: an Oscar, a Tony, two Emmys, and a Grammy. In 2019, Moreno became the Peabody Career Achievement Award, making her the first Latina to achieve PEGOT status .The event will help raise vital funds to support museum exhibitions, education initiatives and public programming, including screenings, school programs and access initiatives in service of the public and the local community of Los Angeles.

SPOTLIGHT June 2019: Rita Coburn, Film Activist and Filmmaker, MAYA ANGELOU: AND STILL I RISE

Rita Coburn’s acclaimed documentary Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, co-directed with Bob Hercules, was released in 2016, but the film is ever timely in its importance and impact. In an ongoing outreach program, Coburn still travels with the film to schools and community centers, bringing to a wide range of audiences — especially impressionable youngsters — an understanding of the brilliant and inspiring Dr. Angelou, of her empowering story, of the importance of storytelling and of documentary film as the record of essential human history — especially the herstory that hasn’t been taught in schools.
