PARK CITY, UTAH – Due to the latest wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022 Sundance Film Festival is going fully online.
Originally planned as a hybrid event, the scheduled in-person events were scrapped this week as the highly virulent omicron variant has sent COVID case numbers soaring once again.

Longtime filmmaker and executive Joana Vicente will take the helm as the new CEO of the Sundance Institute at the beginning of November. She will be responsible for setting strategies for the institute that embrace the evolving future of storytelling and build on the Sundance’s record of supporting visionary artists with distinct voices in film, theater, film composing, episodic storytelling and emerging media.

Joana Vicente’s first year as co-head of the Toronto International Film Festival was a triumph. The transplanted New Yorker oversaw a TIFF that had all the bases covered: superb films, A-list movie stars in attendance, initiatives in place to level the playing field for filmmakers (and journalists) and all the razzle dazzle required to make the festival a magnet for industry, audience and tourism dollars. Her second TIFF happened in a pandemic. It too was a triumph.
