I.S.S seems remarkably timely now that two American astronauts – Sunita Williams and Barry ‘Butch’ Wilmore, who took off for the International Space Station for an eight-day trip – may be stuck there until 2025 as the war between U.S.-backed Ukraine and Russia rages on. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s taut thriller envisions a halcyon time marked by American and Russia collaboration – when three astronauts and three cosmonauts are routinely performing various scientific tasks in their orbiting laboratory.

Structured as much around tensions between city and country as it is past and present, The Cow is one of those deeply complex films that through the joint powers of its collaborators both in front and behind the camera somehow manages to make it all look very easy indeed. Whether the twist works – and oh boy, what a twist it is – will ultimately be up to the taste preferences of the given viewer, but there is no doubt that the set up alone makes this film well worth the ride alone. Once again proving that the long-awaited Winona Ryder renaissance is well and truly here, The Cow is regardless so much more than a star vehicle.

Sadie has a disturbing power that sneaks up on you from an unexpected quarter, as a teenaged girl crosses the boundary from childhood to too-early adulthood. This coming-of-age story feels very universal, and would work equally well with a teenaged boy at its center, but which gets extra unnerving power by casting it as a girl’s journey.
