An adaptation of her 2004 memoir of the same title, Sue Carpenter’s 40 Watts from Nowhere entertainingly traces the director’s journey as a pirate radio station mistress and DJ, who for a brief period of time in the late ‘90s exposed San Francisco and then Los Angeles to music that was off the beaten path. Broadcasting from her tiny apartment in Silver Lake, Carpenter’s station KBLT immediately tapped into the national indie music scene, quickly expanding to include guest DJ slots from members of the Germs and the Minutemen, and even a historic live appearance from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
