As 2025 winds down, we want to report on the film critic mentorship program AWFJ piloted in partnership with my former high school teacher, Drew Marvin, at Woodson High School in Northern Virginia. Students aged 15 through 18 in grades nine through 12 participated in Mr. Marvin’s after school film club which convened every other week or so.

“Lady Bird” is as edgy, raw and funny as growing up. Screenwriter/director Greta Gerwig has wrought a gem of a coming-of-age film set in 2002. Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) plays Christine McPherson, a senior at a private Catholic high school. The girl who wants to be known as “Lady Bird” gives the teachers and some of her classmates a run for their money with her approach to authority.

Actress/screenwriter Greta Gerwig makes an auspicious directorial debut with this perceptive coming-of-age dramedy, chronicling the tempestuous bond between a teenager and her mother. Set in 2002-3 in Gerwig’s hometown of Sacramento, California, it begins with novelist Joan Didion’s acerbic observation: “Anybody who talks about California hedonism has never spent a Christmas in Sacramento.”
