GUEST OF HONOUR – Review by Carol Cling

Like many of Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s psychological dramas, Guest of Honour focuses on such themes as guilt, repentance and redemption, this time filtered through the sins of a father — and his daughter. Yet as this slice-and-dice script bounces around in time and tone, it sets up thematic revelations that, upon arrival, seem more arbitrary than artful.

Opening Sept. 12, AWFJ’s Movie of the Week is The Skeleton Twins, starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader as estranged twins who help each other figure out why their lives turned out so poorly. Director Craig Johnson knows how to use Wiig and Hader’s comedic talents to great effect, without taking away from the movie’s melancholy themes.
