An adorable star returns to the screen in Trifole, one that knows some of life’s greatest truths: that what you love, makes you happy, brightens your days and gives your existence purpose is worth digging for, and worth digging in for to claim, protect and savour. Birba was a scene-stealing delight in 2020’s The Truffle Hunters, the Directors Guild of American Awards’ documentary winner the following year. Now, she brings her sensitive nose and quiet determination to Trifole, again scouring northern Italy for subterranean fungi, but this time as one of four key on-screen talents — the lone canine — in an absorbing and moving feature that feels as if it too has been unearthed like the foodstuff that’s made the Piedmont region so famous.

Marketed around its concept of stories by and about women, this compilation of shorts was co-produced by the non-profit organization We Do It Together, which promotes gender parity in film and media. The stories mostly revolve around women in crisis, which provides narrative drama but doesn’t feel universal or representative of women’s lives in general. While there’s plenty of diversity across the shorts in terms of race, ethnicity and nationality, the focus begs the question of why the film didn’t opt for more diversity in stories and tone. Being a woman doesn’t have to mean overcoming constant crises, does it?
