Misgivings about being an artist might be worse than unrealized creative desire. How many frustrated artists wonder not just if they’re good enough but if what they’re doing is worthwhile? The offbeat dramatic comedy Not an Artist explores this ambivalence with a likeable ensemble cast and relatable gusto, combining an artistic retreat and a father-daughter story into a heartening collage. Aspiring fantasy author Alice is one of seven artists who lands a coveted spot at a monthlong residency run by The Abbott, who promises a space to “learn your true potential as the artist you were destined to be.”

Unplugging goes all in on exploring the pitfalls of our addictions to our electronic devices, in a shrewdly satirical and slightly annoying way. The jokes don’t always land but the main characters, a couple who are trying to reconnect with each other, are amusing enough to keep us journeying with them in their weekend escape from the pressures of email, texting, and roaming Wi-Fi connections.
