THE SOCIAL RECKONING – Review by Diane Carson

With his characteristic targeted dialogue and efficient pace, writer/director Aaron Sorkin dramatizes an uncomplicated but extremely important story in The Social Reckoning. The Wall Street Journal investigative reporter Jeff Horwitz’s (Jeremy Allen White) search for the truth about Facebook’s guiding principles and safety protocols (or lack thereof) depends on Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison). Only internal documents will provide essential details which Haugen at first parses and reluctantly shares. However, as her moral compass guides her, Haugen will become the lynchpin in critical, corporate revelations substantiating the danger and damage known and indifferently perpetrated by Facebook. In a parallel scenario, CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong) preps for Congressional testimony, prompted and advised by unscrupulous advisers.

Ani (Oscar nominee Mikey Madison) – a tough-talking 23-year-old stripper from Brighton Beach in South Brooklyn, who hooks up with 21-year-old Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the obscenely spoiled son of a Russian oligarch.

ANORA (TIFF 2024) – Review by Liz Braun

Anora is a terrific movie, but no surprise there — it’s been winning over audiences since it took the Palme D’Or at Cannes last spring. Writer/director Sean Baker once again mines the world o’ sex work to find a great story populated by a rag-tag crowd of the dispossessed and disenfranchised. In Anora, a young sex worker marries the son of a Russian oligarch; she then has to deal with the fallout when his powerful parents show up, demanding an annulment. It’s a Damon Runyon tale for the 21st century, a subversive Cinderella story that’s hugely energetic and often very funny.
