It’s been a turbulent few years for the organization behind Toronto’s annual Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival, but each spring they still manage to deliver a sure-footed 10-day event filled with a host of must-see features and shorts. The 2026 edition was no exception. And like many recent festivals, this year’s slate gave movie-lovers engaging stories from home and around the world and from both up-and-coming and established filmmakers. Programmers put a real effort into making their line-up diverse–from every viewpoint–and it shows.

True/False Film Festival 2026 – Overview by Diane Carson

Every film festival offers a mixed bag of cinematic selections, and the 23rd True/False Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri, March 5-8, was no exception. Devastatingly tragic narratives alternated with heartening success stories pitted against formidable foes. Over four days, attendees choose among 35 new feature films and 25 short films presented in 114 screenings at seven venues, among them the 1928 pre-Depression Missouri Theatre on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the most rewarding experiences come in the 100 post-film discussions offering stimulating insights into and background for the just-screened work. Three women directors’ films led my list of exemplary documentaries.
