Lisa Cholodenko’s acclaimed 1998 debut feature High Art is getting a Blu-ray release this month via The Criterion Collection. The queer romantic drama follows Lucy Berliner (Ally Sheedy), a once-prominent photographer who has retreated into a life of heroin abuse with her faded-actress lover (Patricia Clarkson). When Lucy is rediscovered by Syd (Radha Mitchell), an up-and-coming editor at a photography magazine, professional ambition and personal attraction become dangerously entwined. Cholodenko was still a student in Columbia University’s master of fine arts film program when she wrote High Art, which won numerous awards.

The drama Life Upside Down taps into those feelings that gripped so many during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns. Inertia, ennui, limbo, and isolation. The restlessness of trying to better ourselves, stay centered, or at least sane. And for some, noticing how quarantining revealed more than a few cracks in a relationship.

Asking for It fearlessly takes on the patriarchy, addresses timely issues like racism, homophobia and rape culture and provides a showcase for several LGBTQ+ actors and performers of color. Director Eamon O’Rourke has taken copious cues from Tony Scott’s 2004 cult favorite “Man on Fire,” favoring a flashy visual style that includes frenetic cuts, slashing on-screen text and frequent freeze frames.
