Not all cinema superheroines wear capes. In fact, one leader in the league of heroic women whose accomplishments are celebrated in cinema was the wearer of black robes and white lace collars, and she has been as much of a superheroine in real life as she has been on the screen. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on September 18 at age 87, championed women’s rights for her entire career and leaves a legacy of progressive positive change in the United States. Her ethos and accomplishments have been celebrated in film.

On the Basis of Sex is the back story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg became notorious by winning a landmark case that prevented discrimination, well, on the basis of sex. The fact that she won that case by defending a man was brilliant, and the fact that her beloved husband, Marty (Armie Hammer), brought her the case is couple goals, for sure.

Whereas the stirring documentary covers the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, the feature film covers her early, ceiling-breaking case of a man denied a tax exemption that would have been granted were he female.

Director Mimi Leder’s On the Basis of Sex offers viewers a glimpse of RBG’s life before she became notorious, when she was “just” a smart, tenacious lawyer (as embodied by Felicity Jones) who was determined to fight for gender equality.

In a nice companion piece to the excellent documentary about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, RBG, released earlier this year, On the Basis of Sex presents an inspiring biopic of the young RBG. Felicity Jones plays Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Mimi Leder’s drama, in which the future Supreme Court Justice battles sexism in an era when discrimination on the basis of sex was perfectly legal.

AWFJ’s Movie of the Week focuses attention on excellent films directed by women and/or centered on the stories of complex and fully realized women characters who are grappling — directly or metaphorically — with the issues women face in daily life. We heartily applaud the variety of style and story, we honor the moviemakers who’ve brought them to the screen. As year end holidays approach and the movie awards season heats up, Team #MOTW members revisit our selections to suggest their favorites for immediate viewing.
